UPDATE: 2024 year season is already over, we start again in May 2025.
If you’re looking for an extraordinary adventure along the coast of Brazil, whale watching in São Sebastião should be at the top of your list. This incredible experience offers a unique opportunity to witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
When does whale watching season start?
The season in São Sebastião usually starts at the end of May and lasts until September, sometimes longer. During these months, the waters off the coast of São Sebastião become a migration route for several species of whales, which is the perfect time to observe them. The best period, from June to July, offers high chances to see various whales during their journey along the coast. Just this Sunday, June 9, 2024, ship captains spotted 15 different whales. However, you don't have to be so lucky on Monday. Fortunately, cruise ship captains echo each other, so the chance of seeing whales is quite high, but not 100 percent. For the year 2023, 740 different whales were recorded in the strait between the island of Ilhabela and the coast.
What kinds of whales can you expect?
The waters of São Sebastião host various species of whales during the migration season. The most commonly observed whales include:
Humpback Whale: Known for their acrobatic performances and distinctive hump, these whales are popular with watchers. They migrate to the warmer waters of Brazil to find a mate and give birth.
Bryde's Whale: Lives in the region between the ocean and the coast. It feeds on small fish and reaches a length of up to 16.5 meters, you can recognize them thanks to the three prominent ridges on the top of the head.
Minke Whale: They are known for their curiosity and can come close to ships, compared to minke whales they are much smaller.
Why is it worth watching whales in São Sebastião?
São Sebastião is an ideal spot for whale watching due to its clear, calm waters and breathtaking coastal scenery. It is located only 200 km from the metropolis of São Paulo and, together with the island of Ilhabela, is a popular weekend destination for people from the city and the surrounding area. The region's rich marine biodiversity and the presence of several marine protected areas create a safe haven for migrating whales. In addition to whales, dolphins, sea turtles or stingrays often swim by, occasionally stray sea lions, penguins or elephant seals appear on the coast. The local community is committed to sustainable tourism practices, ensuring that whale-watching activities do not disturb these gentle giants - for example, boating within 100 meters or swimming with them is prohibited.
